VOCATIONAL TRAINING ONLY OPTION TO EMPLOY DROP-OUT RURAL YOUTHS

Vedanta’s Company Hindustan Zinc picks up 500 rural youths for Vocational Training, will get employed…
Organizing training programs in rural India has never been easy. The unemployed youth find it easy to spend time in effortless things and are not inclined to undertake vocational training for employment. Further, for girls, it is not easy to convince family, as they find difficult to send the daughters for daily attendance or if residential program, for letting her stay away from the family. But tiring efforts from the company, Hindustan Zinc and quality of training program has shown remarkable results in not only engaging with these unemployed youths but also giving them direction and focus in life.

10th Pass Raju Kumawat is son of a poor farmer from Chokdi village of Rajsamand District. Being the eldest son, he had the responsibility of feeding the family of 6 people. Raju dropped out from the school and started earning for the livelihood. But due to lack of education or any training, he could not earn substantially. He came to know about professional training program being conducted by Hindustan Zinc at Debari in District Udaipur. He approached the company and was enrolled for training program in mining and drilling.

Under the 3 months training program, Raju not only gained technical proficiency but also saw change in his personality. He is more confident person today and could converse efficiently.

Instantly, through campus placements post training program, Raju was employed with a salary of about Rs. 4,000/- pm.   With time Raju progressed and is now earning Rs 12000/- pm.

Anees from Zawar Mines, one of the two sons of small cashier at co-operative shop, is another successful example of the said training program. He was never interested in studies and soon dropped-out from the school. Engaged in doing nothing, Anees daily routine stood hanging around with his friends and sitting at a tea stall without any hope.
Anees situation was a matter of concern for his father who then decided to register his name for the training program when Hindustan Zinc team approached him.

Initially, at the centre, he was the most mischievous student but soon started taking interest due to interactive training methodology. He showed keen interest in learning computers.  Anees was also benefited by the soft skills and personality development sessions. In short duration of 3 months, he not only learnt MS Office but also the design softwares like Photoshop, CorelDraw and Tally. Anees is today working as a Marketing Executive in Udaipur and earning Rs. 10,000 pm.

HINDUSTAN ZINC "MARYADAA" - MAIL TODAY - HINDUSTAN ZINC'S STP TREATING 30% OF UDAIPUR'S SEWAGE

Another step towards “SWACHH BHARAT”
Udaipur's First Sewage Treatment Plant...

Hindustan Zinc, a company of Vedanta Group in Zinc-Lead-Silver business has come forward and built Udaipur’s fist sewage treatment plant (STP) that treats 30% of the sewage generated by the city of lakes, a world’s class tourism destination. Udaipur generates about 70 million litres of sewage per day and Hindustan Zinc Sewage Treatment Plant is treating 20 million litres per day.   This STP has been built with a cost of Rs. 170 crore and has been constructed and commissioned on ‘Design Build Own Operate and Transfer’ basis in association with Government of Rajasthan.

Government of Rajasthan has been looking for this project for quite some time and there always has been a dire need for a large corporate to align and associate with the Government to address growing sewage problem in Udaipur. Hindustan Zinc being one of the largest corporate in Rajasthan and leader in undertaking environment friendly projects signed an agreement to undertake this project.

Udaipur, the city of lakes, elevated hills and magnificent cultural heritage with exotic palaces, celestial temples, colourful festivals and express highways is no doubt one of the most sought after national and global tourism destinations. Lakhs of tourists visit Udaipur every year.

With the time, in the last few years, the local population of Udaipur has also grown. The advent of shopping malls and multiplexes have been instrumental in building a new and modern Udaipur. As the city has grown, the maintenance of current infrastructure has also become a challenge, particularly in relation to cleanliness of majestic lakes. The challenge is to sustain the freshness of these lakes. For long, the lakes have been absorbing the disposal of human waste which has become critical as the contamination is now clearly visible on the surface of the water.

On an average, Udaipur city generates about 70 million litres of sewage per day and cleaning this sewage was itself a challenge. Currently, most of the sewage is travelling to various lakes leading to contamination of water, polluting lakes and thereby affecting overall beauty of these lakes. The only solution that was evident was constructing a large scale Sewage Treatment Plant that could take the load of treating this massive sewage. This treatment of sewage would not only keep the lakes clean, a strong move towards clean environment, but would also help in retaining the majestic looks of these lakes that attract lakhs of tourists every year.

Not just treating sewage, the Hindustan Zinc Sewage Treatment Plant, in the process, would also be generating a large quantity of manure that will be sold by Udaipur Municipal Corporation to the local bodies. This initiative itself is estimated to generate revenue of Rs. 1 crore every year. To ensure there is no piling-up of stocks of manure, the Udaipur Municipal Corporation will be disposing off the manure on fortnightly basis.

Hindustan Zinc, adhering to its commitment towards clean green environment and maintaining highest standards of waste management, commissioned this Sewage Treatment Plant in 2014. Hindustan Zinc will gradually divert domestic sewage pipeline into large pipe-lines, leading to the Sewage Treatment Plant, to reduce the flow of sewage in the lakes.

Hindustan Zinc is one of the pioneers in adopting clean green technology in running its plants. Saving water has always been a focus area for Hindustan Zinc. While maintaining the global benchmark and working continuously towards water conservation, the company has been successfully reducing its water footprints by reducing the water consumption every year. All the business locations of Hindustan Zinc are working on zero discharge principle, while putting on efforts and research for gainful utilization of waste generated by them.

Hindustan Zinc Sewage Treatment Plant project is a major step not only towards treatment of sewage in Udaipur but also a significant initiative towards building a sustainable environment and conservation of water.

HINDUSTAN ZINC "MARYADAA" - ECONOMIC TIMES - HRD MINISTRY ASKS SCHOOLS TO FOCUS ON HYGIENE AND CLEANLINESS

By Yogima Sharma, ET Bureau | 5 Nov, 2014

NEW DELHI: In what could be a pretty demanding Children's Day pledge this year, the Narendra Modi government has directed all schools under its ambit to ensure that morning assembly in government schools focus on cleanliness and hygiene, and urge students to keep the statue in their school, if any, clean, besides clean their classrooms, laboratories, libraries, playground, toilets, drinking water areas and school gardens.

In a recent directive to Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, the department of school education and literacy under the ministry of human resource and development, has asked all schools to ensure that children discuss cleanliness and hygiene in the school assembly every day, and that each school forms a children's cabinet to supervise and monitor the cleanliness initiative.

The move is in sync with the government's vision of Clean India by 2019, and aims to ensure that all schools have separate toilets for girls and boys by July 2015. The schools that will have to follow the directive include 1092 Kendriya Vidyalas under the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and 598 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalas under the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, impacting nearly 15 lakh students in government schools across the country.

"The government of India has directed its own schools through the Kendriya Vidyalas and the Navodya Vidyalas to celebrate the Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan by taking up a programme for cleanliness in schools on a roundthe-year basis," the government has informed the ministry of drinking water and sanitation, which is overseeing the implementation of the project.

"The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti have been asked to take up, inter alia, the following activities that include talk by a few children on different aspects of cleanliness in the school assembly every day, especially with respect to sayings and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi on cleanliness and hygiene," the note sent by the department of education to the implementing ministry said.

Besides, the department of education has also directed these schools to continue with the Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan beyond October 31, 2014, by organising film shows, model activities on hygiene, periodic essay/painting and other competition, role plays, etc., to reassert the message of Swachh Bharat-Swachh Vidyalaya.

Justifying the decision that's expected to impact the regular course of teaching in these schools, the note said, "In collaboration with the state governments, we are making efforts to inculcate the spirit of hygiene, cleanliness and aversion to unhygienic conditions in all children from the very initial years of their school itself."

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2, involves an investment of Rs 1,96,009 crore to construct 12 crore toilets across the country. The mission will culminate on October 2, 2019, which will mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

HINDUSTAN ZINC "MARYADAA" - TIMES OF INDIA - NOW RAJASTHAN'S 7 TRIBAL VILLAGES DECLARED FREE FROM DEFECATION IN OPEN

TNN | Oct 26, 2014,

UDAIPUR: South Rajasthan may be a tribal dominant and a socio-economically backward area in the state but great things are happening here. Seven villages of Chittorgarh, Udaipur and Bhilwara districts have become Open Defecation Free (ODF) as 10,000 households have broken off from the traditional practice of defecating in the open after constructing pucca toilets at their homes.

Project 'Maryadaa' is being championed by the state government and Vedanta group's Hindustan Zinc, one of the global largest producer of zinc, silver and lead, with a mission to make Rajasthan an Open Defecation Free state. The project operates with an innovative methodology for mobilizing communities to progressively work towards stopping open defecation.

"Vedanta 'Maryadaa' campaign joined the Prime Minister call for Swachh Bharat, we carried a special drive at Vedanta premises, colony and within community," Anil Agarwal, chairman of the group, tweeted recently. Vedanta business locations carried out cleanliness drive and employees too joined the campaign in its townships.

"Taking forward the Swachh Bharat campaign, Hindustan Zinc is constructing 30,000 toilets out of which 10,000 have already been constructed. Once we complete our initial target, 80 villages will become ODF in Rajasthan within two years," Pavan Kaushik, the spokesperson informed.

"I learnt about the negative effects of open defecation, and I did not want to be the one contributing to the pollution of the environment and exposing other people to risks," said Kaisi Bai a poor tribal woman at Karget village, near Debari in Udaipur, who was among the first people to dig a pit. All the members of her family now use toilet and do not go in open for defecation.

"My grandchildren do not suffer from stomach problems now after we started using toilet," she said. Kaisi Bai had to spend only 900 rupees from her pocket, the rest of the expenditure, about Rs 8000 was met by Hindustan Zinc and the state government.

Similarly, many households of Maton village at Maton mines, Rela, Nevatalai and Chanawda villages at Zawar Mines, Dabok, at Zinc Smelter Debari are the villages in Udaipur while Bansen at Chittorgarh Parasrampura village at Agucha Mines in Bhilwara have been facilitated by the project partners to become ODF.

"I am very happy to have a lavatory. I find it very convenient using it instead of going to the bush. This gives me privacy to do my business with dignity" said Kanku Bai, another beneficiary. The project also emphasis on behaviour change as a more sustainable way to sanitation improvement. It triggers a realization in the community on the harmful consequences of open defecation and a desire to take immediate action. "The villagers required a great amount of persuasion and counseling for construction and use of toilets and importantly to maintain them amicably. Initially, no one was ready as they obviously preferred the easy way, open defecation.

But women and children played important role and so the elderly people. It's a collective effort to live a life of dignity" Kaushik added. Now all the households at the seven villages are are proud of their achievements. It is not easy for poor earning tribal families to spare money required to build their individual toilets when it can be had for free in the fields. Certainly there are going to be many more success stories on the lines of these villages, which has already taken a lead.

HINDUSTAN ZINC "MARYADAA" - ECONOMIC TIMES - SMART SOLUTIONS FOR INDIA'S SANITATION CRISIS

ECONOMIC TIMES
Delhi Edition – October 14th, 2014

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's emphasis on the issue of public hygiene presents interesting opportunities for corporates to come forward and support the cause of sanitation under their CSR agenda
PROFESSOR JACK SIM & ANURAAG SAXENA

The sanitation mantra is all-pervasive in India today, thanks to PM Modi's address highlighting the issue of public hygiene. While the non-believers stuck to their guns, the man with the mission is going ahead with the launch of 'The Swachch Bharat Mission' on October 2, under which every household is to be enabled with toilet facility by 2019.

IS SANITATION A HEALTH ISSUE OR A GENDER ISSUE?
54% of India's population defecates in the open. This leads to low public hygiene and a higher incidence of illnesses, hence an overall burden on health facilities and infrastructure. From a gender-equity perspective, we see girls dropping out of schools (that do not have girls' toilets) once they hit puberty. The horrific murder of the two girls in Uttar Pradesh showed us just how imminent the need for toilets are, in terms of correcting a huge socil inequity.

INDIA'S LOVE-HATE RELATIONSHIP WITH CSR

Indian corporate houses have had a deep rooted history of creating social good. So why is CSR considered a foreign concept that Indian business houses need to “adapt to“? The answer lies in where Indian CSR chiefs are perhaps not as well equipped as their western counterparts. (1) Structuring (clearly defined outcomes with well-defined budgets) (2) Management (program implementation and evaluation) (3) Amplification (reporting performance publicly).

SO WHY SHOULD CORPORATES CARE?
So, why should a corporate support a sanitation drive as a CSR initiative?
Interestingly, toilets lead to bad economy! The lack of access to a toilet leads to low hygiene which exposes individuals to health ailments and hence loss of productivity which in turn puts pressure on the economy and an increasing burden on taxpayers to fund health initiatives. A person family at the base-of-the-health-pyramid may neither have the interest nor inclination to be a 'consumer' of aspirational products such as talcum powder, perfumed soap, packaged food, oil, biscuits, etc. Promoting self -hygiene and sanitation, particularly amongst women may actually be in the best interests of the rural marketers and improve their bottom line. A healthier woman would mean a more aware set of consumers with a strong aspirational quotient.

SO WHY NOT JUST BUILD LOTS OF TOILETS?
The Indian sanitation story is not just an access-issue (i.e. access to toilets), rather a mindset-issue. Awareness is a much larger challenge larger than infrastructure.

Construction of more toilets and a rational approach explaining the health and hygiene benefits is just not enough. The mere availability of government-built toilets will not end open defecation. In many cases, toilets constructed in villages are being used as stores, kitchens, shrines and other purposes due to cleaning and maintenance-issues.

MARYADAA - CONSTRUCTING 30,000 TOILETS IN RAJASTHAN, TO CONSTRUCT 10,000 MORE

To make 80 Villages 'Open Defecation Free’
Hindustan Zinc, a Sesa Sterlite company in zinc-lead-silver business, recently launched a social awareness campaign 'MARYADAA' (www.facebook.com/maryadaa ), to give impetus to its project of construction of toilets and spread mass awareness in public at large, with special focus on school children about good sanitation and hygiene habits.

On the initiative of Rajasthan Government, Hindustan Zinc has signed an MoU to build 30,000 toilets for rural families under 'Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan'. The company has already started the construction of these toilets in Bhilwara, Chittorgarh and Udaipur districts and so far the construction of 9,000 toilets have been completed. The balance construction is expected to be completed within 2 years.

This initiative will make 80 rural and tribal villages in Rajasthan 'Open Defecation Free’.

The company is constructing 2 ‘Leach Pits’ below each toilet to facilitate disposal of waste. Only one ‘Leach Pit’ will be used at a time. Each ‘Leach Pit’ is estimated to be full in about 5 years. As the first ‘Leach Pit’ is full, the second ‘Leach Pit’ will be opened. Within 5 years, the waste in the first ‘Leach Pit’ will be converted into manure to be utilized by the farmer for agriculture purpose.

These newly constructed toilets will also minimize the risk of contamination of drinking water sources thus reducing the health related problems in rural India. Under the `Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan’, cost of construction of each toilet is Rs. 8,500/- where Rs. 4600 per toilet is being paid by government, Rs. 3000 by Hindustan Zinc and Rs. 900 by the beneficiary.

Lack of Toilet facilities in rural areas for females has always been a matter of concern, especially during the late hours or during pregnancy. Toilet in each house-hold provides comfort, convenience with a sense of security and dignity to each member of the house. The Hindustan Zinc campaign 'MARYADAA' is also expected to improve good hygiene practices and create awareness towards health & sanitation.

The ultimate objective is to eliminate open defecation practices in the villages and make Rajasthan an ‘Open Defecation Free State’.

According to UNICEF report, today only 48% of rural Indian population has access to good toilet and sanitation facilities. When more than 50% of Indian population defecates in open it leads to improper disposal of the waste, sanitation issues and cause of many harmful diseases. With Rajasthan in particular, 60% of population defecates in open. A World Health Organization (WHO) report has also highlighted that half a billion (50 crore) people in India still continue to defecate in gutters, behind bushes or in open water bodies, with no dignity or privacy.

The most credible reason for large number of population in India still defecating in open is due to lack of awareness about the problems associated with open defecation.  Poor sanitation, hygiene and open defecation is responsible for 50% of the cases of maternal and childhood under-nutrition.  There is a synergy between diarrhea diseases and under-nutrition where exposure to one increases vulnerability to the other.

In Bangladesh and Brazil only 7% population defecate in open. In China only 4% of the population defecates in open.

Government, Corporates, NGOs and common people have to come together to address this mammoth issue which has become a matter of dignity and concern for the rural families and the nation.

HINDUSTAN ZINC CONSTRUCTING 30,000 TOILETS IN RURAL RAJASTHAN

80 Villages in Rajasthan to become 'Open Defecation Free’

Hindustan Zinc, a Sesa Sterlite company in Zinc-Lead-Silver business has signed MoU with the State Government of Rajasthan to build 30,000 rural toilets for BPL families under 'Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan' scheme. The construction of these toilets will be completed in 3 years. This initiative will make 80 rural and tribal villages in Rajasthan 'Open Defecation Free’.

The company has started the construction of these toilets in Bhilwara, Chittorgarh and Udaipur districts of Rajasthan and so far the construction of 8,000 toilets has been completed.

Under the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, cost of construction of each toilet is Rs. 8,500/- where Rs. 4600 per toilet is being paid by government, Rs. 3000 by Hindustan Zinc and Rs. 900 by the beneficiary.

Lack of Toilet facilities in rural areas for females has always been a matter of concern, especially during the late hours. Toilet in each house-hold provides comfort, convenience with a sense of security and dignity to each member of the house, particularly the female members. The project is also expected to improve good hygiene practices and create awareness towards health & sanitation.

“This project of constructing toilets has been undertaken by Hindustan Zinc with an objective to provide clean and hygienic house-hold toilets to the BPL families that will discourage and eventually eliminate open defecation practices in the villages. Hindustan Zinc would be spending about Rs. 8.6 crore towards construction of these 30,000 toilets” informed Pavan Kaushik, Head of Corporate Communication.
