Hindustan Zinc under its unique initiative  - “Jeevan Tarang”, on the occasion of World Disability Day distributed Android Smart Phones to blind students of Pragya Chakshu School, Udaipur and Badhir Baal Kalyan Vikas Samiti, Bhilwara on 4^th December, 2017 with an objective of enhancing academic opportunities for these children and mainstreaming them into the society.

These Android Smart phones will enable the visually impaired students to ‘Read & Write’ using Accessibility Features on the device. These phones will allow these students to access their textbooks in DAISY format from the world’s largest Online Library for the Print Disabled – ‘Bookshare’. This will bring these students at par with other students by allowing them to comprehend, read and prepare their academic content for better understanding hence making them competitive & ready for any exam. These Accessible devices will also allow the students to access the power of the internet and also gain worldly knowledge. They will also be able to enjoy games specially designed for Blind users on their phones.

The report says, India is home to the world's largest number of blind people. Out of 37 million people across the globe who are blind, over 15 million are from India. It is also known that quality education is an absolute necessity in order to succeed and progress in this knowledge driven world. Most of the current educational curriculum is oriented towards the use of the eyesight thus poses paramount challenges to the blind and visually impaired students.

Many organizations are working consciously and tirelessly to ensure these children get their due attention. Through Jeevan Tarang, Hindustan Zinc has provided these Android phones to the students from Class 1^st – Class 5^th of Pragya Chakshu School, Udaipur and to all the students of Badhir Baal Kalyan Vikas Samiti, Bhilwara accessing them the basic human right to educate & learn, a critical step on the path to economic, educational, and social development. Hindustan Zinc has partnered with experts to build capacities of these institutions and under this initiative Mr. Nitin Patel has been appointed in both these schools as a trainer to train these students in these advanced gadgets.

The Chief Guest of the event, Amitabh Gupta – CFO, HZL expressed his happiness to see the passion of these students to learn and climb up the ladder of success. He emphasized that through Jeevan Tarang, Hindustan Zinc strives to provide better opportunities to these students to grow and learn.

HINDUSTAN ZINC’S JEEVAN TARANG INITIATES ‘GARV SE’ CAMPAIGN FOR SPECIAL CHILDREN

Hindustan Zinc under its ‘Jeevan Tarang – Zinc Ke Sang’ Project has initiated around six month long Campaign – ‘Garv Se’ where these Special Children of God would be participating in series of creative activities to engage them with Hindustan Zinc employees & their families on a same platform.

The program has been formally launched by Hindustan Zinc Ladies Club on 26^th September, 2017 where Painting Workshop along with other artistic activities – clay modelling, diya painting & block painting were organized that saw the participation of around 60 children from Viklang Kalyan Samiti, Udaipur & Prayas Sansthan, Udaipur.

The objective of the Campaign is to mainstream the specially abled children by bringing them together with the society/community and Garv Se has been a step towards it by engaging Hindustan Zinc employees and their families through the series of engagements – movie screening, sports, trekking, dance workshops to name a few.

"Jeevan Tarang - Zinc Ke Sang” was formally launched on Foundation Day of Hindustan Zinc, i.e., on 10^th January, 2017.

The fact says that there are over 70 million disabled people in India out of which over 12 million are hearing impaired with hardly 500 government aided Deaf schools providing formal education to these children. Even the teachers working in these schools are not equipped or trained to teach the hearing impaired students as Sign Language is still not accepted as a medium of teaching and communication. More than 90 % of students with deafness do not have access to and are out of the formal education system. Lack of access to language has also kept the deaf away from development of social and cognitive skills.

There are few children that god has made with lots of love, affection & care and this is the reason, these children are known as 'special children of God'. These children make you smile instantly and also brings tears in our eyes. As these are special children,  they do require and need a lot of care and attention.  

Many organizations are working consciously and tirelessly to ensure these children get their due attention. “Jeevan Tarang” is a unique initiative launched by Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Group company with an objective of enhancing education and skill opportunities for the disabled, and mainstreaming them into the society. Under the program, around 500 beneficiaries have been identified from Hindustan Zinc’s operational areas by working with schools for deaf-mute, visually impaired and for children with brain damages in Ajmer, Bhilwara, Chittorgarh and Udaipur.

On 30^th August, 2017, on Zinc Day, Children of Jeevan Tarang from Shri Sanwaliya Bahuuddeshay Viklang Seva Sansthan (SSBVSS), Chittorgarh, Baadhit Baal Vikas Samiti, Ajmer, Viklang Kalyan Samiti, Udaipur and Badhir Baal Vikas Kalyan Samiti, Bhilwara performed during the cultural evening and enthralled the audience with their beautiful heart touching performances.

During the program, Hindustan Zinc also partnered with Noida Deaf Society(NDS) to develop a long-term vision and roadmap for the institutes of Deaf-Mute children. NDS has set up four permanent separate trainers (Deaf Mute themselves) who will teach Indian Sign Language(ISL) to students. Jeevan Tarang  also focuses on capacity building of teachers by teaching them ISL, who then will be equipped to teach the courses in ISL. Through this partnership, the aim is to enable 400 children learn sign language so to empower the children by imparting education and vocational training for rehabilitation of hearing and speaking impaired children, instilling self-confidence and skills & qualitatively improve both their professional and personal potential to be an active contributor to society.

During the program, Mr. Sunil Duggal – CEO, HZL said “The need is to up-bring these children with all love and care. After all they are special children of god and through Jeevan Tarang we strive to provide them with better opportunities to grow and learn.”

HINDUSTAN ZINC TO SPEND RS. 80 CRORES ON EXPANSION OF SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT TO 60 MLD IN UDAIPUR

Sustainability has always been the core value of Hindustan Zinc and all its units operate on Zero Discharge. This Sewage Treatment Plant is a significant step towards conservation of water, care for environment and a step towards zero discharge in the lakes. 

In a major relief to the people of City of Lakes, Udaipur, Hindustan Zinc will be signing an agreement with Udaipur Smart City Limited on 24th June 2017 to set-up another 40 million litres per day (MLD) capacity Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Udaipur. It will prove to be a major step towards treatment of domestic sewage and water conservation in Udaipur.

Hindustan Zinc, India’s largest and world’s leading integrated Zinc-Lead-Silver producer had already commissioned a 20 MLD STP in Udaipur in 2014. With the additional commissioning of 40 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant, the total capacity of Sewage Treatment Plant will be now 60 MLD.

Hindustan Zinc will be signing an agreement in this regard with Udaipur Smart City Limited on 24th June 2017. The ceremony of laying the foundation stone will be held on 25^th June 2017.

On this investment by the company, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, Sunil Duggal said, “The expansion in Sewage Treatment Plant will bring the much required relief to the domestic sewage of Udaipur. Hindustan Zinc has already commissioned Sewage Treatment Plant of 20 MLD capacity in 2014, and currently, we are adding Sewage Treatment Plant of 40 MLD capacity of which Sewage Treatment Plant of 25 MLD capacity will be constructed at Eklingpura, and two decentralized Sewage Treatment Plants with combined capacity of 15 MLD will be constructed along Ayad. The company is expected to spend Rs. 80 crores for this project.”

Earlier while installing the 20 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant, which was commissioned in 2014, the company had invested Rs. 170 crores that involved expenditure pertaining to laying the pipelines for carrying the sewage to the plant.

Udaipur city has been shortlisted as one of the Smart Cities in India and the treatment of domestic sewage will be a boon to the city. In addition to treating the sewage as per its capacity, in case USCL provides more than 25 MLD of sewage, Hindustan Zinc will also treat this sewage as per feasibility.

The construction of 40 MLD capacity Sewage Treatment Plants will be based on Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) process and have a provision for re-use of 50% treated water for Udaipur city. 

Hindustan Zinc has always been conscious of environment and has thus pioneered in adopting clean green technology in running its operations. Saving water has always been a focus area for Hindustan Zinc. Hindustan Zinc has persistent focus on minimal impact on environment and the company practices the policy of reduce, recycle, reuse, and reclaim.Not just treating sewage, these Sewage Treatment Plants, in the process will be generating a large quantity of manure that will be sold to the local bodies.

In its other projects to propagate water conservation, Hindustan Zinc has installed Effluent Treatment Plants with Reverse Osmosis at all smelting locations resulting in reducing fresh water foot prints of the company and also maintaining zero discharge status. The company has also constructed its first Adiabatic Cooling Towers (ACTs) to replace the conventional cooling towers. Adiabatic Cooling Towers reduce water wastage and also reduce the fresh water consumption.

During these years, we have organized several online discussions/debate, ground level workshops with street children, Awards and “KHUSHI” Walk and also direct interaction with thousands of school children to sensitize them about Care for the Deprived Children – their Nutrition, Education & Health.

Our “KHUSHI” Film ‘Humko Mann Ki Shakti Dena’ has been viewed by more than 7.6 million people across the globe – reaching to over 2 crore people, over 200,000 shares, 100,000 likes and 2000 comments. Here, today we celebrate the “KHUSHI” Day with our more than 225,000 followers.

BHAMASHAH AWARD TO HZL

Hindustan Zinc Units - Rajpura Dariba Complex, Chanderiya Smelting Complex and Rampura Agucha Mines received the Bhamashah Award in 22nd State level Bhamashah Award Ceremony organized at Birla Auditorium, Jaipur on 28th June, 2016. The award was presented by Mr. Kailash Meghwal - Rajasthan Vidhansabha President Rajasthan. Mr. Rajendra Prasad Dashora – Location Head, RDC, Mr. Dalpat Singh Chauhan - CSR, RAM and Mr. R.K. Bansal  - DGM Civil, CSC and Mr. Anand Chakravorty - CSR, CSC received the award on the behalf of their respective units. During the event, Mr. Vasudev Devnani - State Education Minister along with various dignitaries were present. The award was presented for various community service initiatives undertaken by HZL.
Chanderiya Smelting Complex also received an appreciation letter for its extraordinary contribution in CSR by Women and Child Development Minister -  Ms. Anita Bhadel and District Collector Chittorgarh - Mr. Indrajeet Singh on 15th August, 2016. On behalf of HZL, Mr. Vinod Wagh - UnitHead, Pyro received the memento.

INDIA TODAY - VISIONARY OF RAJASTHAN AWARD FOR HZL CORPORATE COMMUNICATION

“India Today - Visionary of Rajasthan” Award has been given to Hindustan Zinc Corporate Communication in an event held in Jaipur on 27^th May, 2016. The award was presented by Rajasthan BJP President Shri Ashok Parnami Ji - Hon’ble MP of Jaipur Shri Ramcharan Bohra and Hon’ble Rajasthan Transport & PWD Minister, Shri Yunus Khan.

India-Today Visionary of Rajasthan Award has been presented to Hindustan Zinc’s for the Company’s valuable contribution towards promotion of social and economic up-liftment of rural and tribal women and providing nutrition-health-education to deprived children by way of launching Projects “Sakhi” and “Khushi”.

HINDUSTAN ZINC PROJECT IMPROVING FARMERS AGRICULTURE YIELDS IN RAJASTHAN

Bherulal Bheel, a small illiterate farmer from Kathia Kheda village, Railmagra Block, Rajsamand District has always been very ambitious and desired to become a “Forward Farmer”, a farmer who is aligned with the modern agriculture techniques and methods. His interest to learn new improved agriculture techniques always made him a man to be talked about in the village. But limited resources were not allowing him to fulfill his dream.

On the other side, Hindustan Zinc under its community relations program was successfully running a project, “Improved Agriculture-Horticulture and Water Conservation Project", in association with BAIF. When Bherulal came to know about this project, he immediately decided to join the project.  Through his learning and knowledge, Bherulal has been able to improve his earnings substantially by 110%.

Deep rural villages today either use age old methods of cultivation and harvesting or are struggling to utilize their barren or waste lands. But with advent of technology and modern techniques of farming the life of such farmers is also changing. Hindustan Zinc and its NGO partner have developed various farm based practices which include improved agriculture techniques, commercial cultivation, organic farming, use of micro nutrients, and remedial measures of local disease in crops.  These innovations till now reached to over 5000 farmers in Rajasthan.

Hindustan Zinc, under the “Improved Agriculture-Horticulture and Water Conservation Project" has trained many farmers and taught them the importance of modern agriculture technology and systematic farming. Along with demonstration and exposures, the company has also supported farmers with improved seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, technical and marketing knowledge.

Like Bherulal, Khemraj Meena from Rawa village of Zawar Panchayat in Udaipur also joined this project.  He learned improved agriculture practices and rain water harvesting structure that has given him extra income of Rs 10,000 – 12,000 for a season. Initially, Khemraj used to grow Maize and Wheat in his farm and bought vegetables from Udaipur, only to sell it in his small shop on a small margin.  Today, Khemraj not only does farming of Maize and Wheat but is also utilizing his remaining waste & barren land for vegetable cultivation and orchard development. Khemraj’s success has motivated many more farmers who have now adopted Hybrid Chilli Cultivation.

Similarly, Meera Baksh’s lush green agriculture farm in Khati Kheda village of Bhilwara has his own success story. Meera Baksh has a huge water tank in his house which is connected with his terrace through large pipes that helped him store rain water which he is utilizing to water his plants through the year. Baksh says with smile, ‘Initially, I could hardly produce 10 quintals of crop in a year. Hindustan Zinc has helped me construct this water harvesting system. Now, I am able to save sufficient water during rains and after proper help from the company I am able to do multi-cropping and generate almost 30 – 40 quintals of crops in a year’. One could see a sense of pride and satisfaction of assured livelihood.

Also, Kirtivardhan from village Biliya in Chittorgarh use to apply age old techniques in farming but when Hindustan Zinc introduced him to improved agriculture practices, high yield seeds and build rain water harvesting tank in his farm, his life has changed dramatically. He now has adequate amount of water throughout the year for irrigation along with technical knowledge through training that has given him additional income. His progress and prosperity in vegetable cultivation has motivated other farmers in Chittorgarh to join the “Improved Agriculture-Horticulture and Water Conservation Project".

With continuous improvement and knowledge sharing, farmers are also motivated for orchard development, vegetable cultivation and cash crop cultivation. Hindustan Zinc has also helped farmers in developing Green Houses and Drip Irrigation System for sustainable agriculture cultivation. Canals have been built in the villages, and watershed projects like dry well recharge and construction of ani-cuts have been helping farmers throughout the year.

To further enhance exchange of ideas and techniques, Hindustan Zinc has organized these farmers into small groups. The role of these groups is to regularly share knowledge and expose each other with new innovations.

Hindustan Zinc,  while developing the “Improved Agriculture-Horticulture and Water Conservation Project", has the ultimate objective to reduce the risk in farming, maximize the land usage and make farming as much self-sustainable as possible. The margins may be less but important is that now farmers have a 12 months sustainable farming.


Farmers like Bherulal Bheel of Rajasamand, Khemraj Meena of Udaipur, Meera Baksh of Bhilwara, and Kirtivardhan of Chittorgarh have set examples for many farmers in Rajasthan to follow.

Vedanta CSR initiatives towards bringing socio-economic independence in rural women have extended its reach. The formation of Self Help Groups has been very successful in uniting and bringing together these women who come from different families and backgrounds. Each woman in given a professional training in the village itself as per interest and potential and further linked to banks for financial security.

Today, Vedanta CSR has been able to develop and organize 2100 Self Help Groups where whom about 30,000 women are associated.

These groups have been formed by Vedanta Group companies - Hindustan Zinc, BALCO, Vedanta Aluminium, Sterlite Industries and VAL, Lanjigarh.
