CII-ITC COMMENDS HINDUSTAN ZINC FOR CSR INITIATIVES - CII-ITC SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS 2014

The CSR of Hindustan Zinc has done it once again. This time by winning “CII-ITC Sustainability Commendation-2014 is Corporate Social Responsibility category”. The event was organized in New Delhi on 19th December 2014. Shri Prakash Javadekar - Hon’ble Union Minister for Environment and Forest was the Chief Guest and the award was presented by Ms. Meenakshi Lekhi – Hon’ble Member of Parliament. Mr. Y.C. Deveshwar - Chairman, ITC and  Mr. Chandrajit Banerjeee - Director General, CII were also present on the dais.

 

On behalf of Hindustan Zinc, the Commendation was received by Ms. Sushma Sharma - Head CSR and Ms. Monica Jain - Executive CSR.



CII ITC SUSTAINABILITY AWARD - 2014 TO HINDUSTAN ZINC

Hindustan Zinc received yet another accolade, the "CII ITC Sustainability Award 2014- Outstanding accomplishment" under the Corporate Excellence, in a glittering function organized in New Delhi. The award was given by Shri Prakash Javadekar, Hon’ble Union Minister for Environment & Forest.  Also present on the dais were Ms. Meenakshi Lekhi – Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Mr. YC Deveshwar, Chairman, ITC and  Mr. Chandrajit Banerjeee, Director General, CII.

On behalf of Hindustan Zinc, the "CII ITC Sustainability Award 2014- Outstanding accomplishment" was received by Mr. Mahesh Todkar – Unit Head (Unit-1), Mr. M.K. Yadav – Head Environment and Mr. Hitendra Bhuptawat - Manager IMS & Sustainability, all from Chanderiya Zinc-Lead Smelter.

Open Water international Swimming Champion

Vedanta’s company Hindustan Zinc will support the open water swimming international champion Bhakti Sharma for an year. During this period Bhakti Sharma would be promoting the open water swimming and also train girls in this swimming league. 

Akhilesh Joshi, CEO of Hindustan Zinc informed that “company has in past also sponsored many sports person for promotion of sports. Bhakti Sharma is a resident of Rajasthan and particularly Udaipur and being one of the largest corporate in Rajasthan we felt we should come forward and support such sports person.”

“I am very thankful to Hindustan Zinc for promoting the open water swimming sports and I believe girls in India are very talented and can certainly make their mark internationally. Support from Hindustan Zinc is essential for the sports person like me and also for the sports as this helps the sportsmen in putting 100% efforts”, said Bhakti Sharma.

Bhakti also said that “I would be encouraging girls to join this sport and would personally train them”.

Bhakti Sharma in January is proceeding to make another world record by swimming Antarctica Ocean for 2.5 km. If she is successful, she would be breaking the record of Lewis Pugh of South Africa who swam for 1 km. 

“It would be proud moment for India if she achieves this record as being a girl it would encourage many girls to come forward and join such adventure sports,” said Akhilesh Joshi.

Bhakti Sharma has been pursuing open water swimming for the last 10 years and has also swam across 4 oceans, 8 channels and seas, which itself is a world record. These records have been made by her during the year 2004-2010. In the year 2010 President of India awarded her with Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award. In 2006 Rajasthan government also recognized and commended her efforts.

Bhakti Sharma has also shown her keenness in promoting CSR initiatives of Hindustan Zinc in Rajasthan. 

The MoU in this regard was signed in the presence of Akhilesh Joshi - CEO, Amitabh Gupta - CFO, CSR Mehta - Head-Corporate Relations and Pavan Kaushik - Head Corporate Communication of Hindustan Zinc.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING ONLY OPTION TO EMPLOY DROP-OUT RURAL YOUTHS

Organizing training programs in rural India has never been easy. The unemployed youth find it easy to spend time in effortless things and are not inclined to undertake vocational training for employment. Further, for girls, it is not easy to convince family, as they find difficult to send the daughters for daily attendance or if residential program, for letting her stay away from the family. But tiring efforts from the company, Hindustan Zinc and quality of training program has shown remarkable results in not only engaging with these unemployed youths but also giving them direction and focus in life.

10th Pass Raju Kumawat is son of a poor farmer from Chokdi village of Rajsamand District. Being the eldest son, he had the responsibility of feeding the family of 6 people. Raju dropped out from the school and started earning for the livelihood. But due to lack of education or any training, he could not earn substantially. He came to know about professional training program being conducted by Hindustan Zinc at Debari in District Udaipur. He approached the company and was enrolled for training program in mining and drilling.

Under the 3 months training program, Raju not only gained technical proficiency but also saw change in his personality. He is more confident person today and could converse efficiently. 

Instantly, through campus placements post training program, Raju was employed with a salary of about Rs. 4,000/- pm.   With time Raju progressed and is now earning Rs 12000/- pm.

Anees from Zawar Mines, one of the two sons of small cashier at co-operative shop, is another successful example of the said training program. He was never interested in studies and soon dropped-out from the school. Engaged in doing nothing, Anees daily routine stood hanging around with his friends and sitting at a tea stall without any hope.
Anees situation was a matter of concern for his father who then decided to register his name for the training program when Hindustan Zinc team approached him.


Initially, at the centre, he was the most mischievous student but soon started taking interest due to interactive training methodology. He showed keen interest in learning computers.  Anees was also benefited by the soft skills and personality development sessions. In short duration of 3 months, he not only learnt MS Office but also the design softwares like Photoshop, CorelDraw and Tally. Anees is today working as a Marketing Executive in Udaipur and earning Rs. 10,000 pm.

EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR HINDUSTAN ZINC

Hindustan Zinc’s Unit II Chanderia Lead Zinc Smelter has won Gold Excellence in India Manufacturing Excellence Award 2014 organized by Frost & Sullivan and Times Group. The award function was held at The Trident, Mumbai on 12th Dec 2014. Hindustan Zinc has topped metal sector in the country.

On behalf of Hindustan Zinc - Unit II M/s Mr. Rajesh Kundu, Mr. Pardha Sarathi, Mr. P Yoganand and Mr. Chetan Chippa received the award.
